More particularly, it relates to a method of producing fine powders of magnetic substances having excellent dispersibility, appropriate particle size and particle size distribution, and no water content in the final product. Fine powders of magnetic substances such as magnetite (Fe.sub.3 O.sub.4) and.gamma.-Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3, have heretofore been produced by grinding a starting material such as an ore or ore concentrate to a particle size of 1 to 20.mu.m. The grinding, however, is accompanied by a considerable loss of the starting material and by a substantial rise in the production costs, so that it is difficult to obtain sufficiently fine powders at low cost. Further, fine powders obtained by grinding are in the form of aggregates of irregularly shaped particles, so that if they are further subjected to a strong magnetic field, it is difficult to obtain uniformly fine-grained products. The present inventors have found that the above-described drawbacks can be overcome by the following steps: (1) A starting material is fired in an electric furnace, and the resultant mixture is ground in an intermediate mill to obtain a mixed powder containing.gamma.-Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 and magnetite. (2) The mixed powder is fired in an electric furnace to make a transition to iron oxide and ferrite. (3) The resulting iron oxides are pulverized by means of a jet mill, and a magnetite or ferrite powder is obtained. The above-described method is characterized in that a starting material is fired, and fine powders of iron oxides are pulverized by means of a jet mill to obtain a mixed powder of iron oxides and iron oxides. The powder thus obtained is then fired in an electric furnace to form a transition to magnetite or ferrite and obtain a magnetite or ferrite powder. Such a method of producing fine powders of magnetic substances is advantageous in that a loss of the starting material is extremely small because it consists of a powder rather than a solid. As the steel loss at the time of the production of steel is in the range of about 1% to 6%, and the coal-conversion loss at the time of the production of cement is in the range of about 10% to 1cdb36666d
